Notes |
- John Sibley arrived in America in 1629. He came with Reverend Higgenson, and was among the group who came in Winthrop's Fleet, a commercial enterprise bent on settling the colonies in North America. He first came to Salem, Ma., but later moved to Manchester where he owned land. Records indicate that there were two brothers, John and Richard who came to Salem in 1629. Both these men were married and they united with the church at Charlestown. There are records that indicate that John's wife was named Sarah and also Rachel Pickworth. It is possible that John was married more than once but no proof of this has been found. John Sibley took the freeman's oath 3 Sep 1634. He was a Selectman from the town of Salem and he wen to the general Court at Boston. John had come from Dorsetshire in England where he had made a legal contract in 1617. This indicates that he must have been born about 1597. He had a brother, William, who made a contract at the same time concerning their father's land. The father's name was also William Sibley.
