The Alcorn Girls
The Alcorn Girls
In the foreground, the three daughters of Joseph Nicolls and Mary McElroy Alcorn: Katherine (eldest girl) Margaret, and Jane (youngest). The note on the original photograph indicates that the photo was taken around 1920; based on the apparent ages of the girls we think perhaps 1918. The woman in the background is identified in the picture as Emma Cochran from Pittsburgh. Cochran is a large family in Westmoreland and Armstrong Counties, and at least one Alcorn (Mary) married a Cochran (William). No doubt Emma is a family friend, perhaps a relative.

A very rare photo of the entire Alcorn Family. In 1936, George, the youngest, would have been eight years of age; Jean would have been eighteen and Robert, Jr., twenty-one. Robert, Senior, died in 1939, a few short years after this photo was taken.

William Calvin Barber and Elizabeth Kettering Barber
William Calvin Barber and Elizabeth Kettering Barber
Colorized photo of the young couple; looks to have been taken circa 1890, when they were first married. She's wearing the same dress as in the other photograph of the couple; he seems to be wearing the same suit. Perhaps the pictures were taken on the same day - or maybe those were the only fancy clothes the two of them owned.

William Calvin Orr Barber
William Calvin Orr Barber
There is a fair amount of circumstantial and anecdotal evidence that would indicate that this photo is of Calvin and Elizabeth Barber; it was in a photo album belonging to Alta Jean (Barber) Alcorn, and has been identified by other family members as similar to one they had seen growing up that was identified as such.

There are almost no photographs in anyone's possession of these two together; based on the scarcity of photos, one might assume that this was taken on their wedding day. In Elizabeth's diary, she indicates that she and Calvin were married in the parlor of their parents home in May of 1890. She would have been 21, he 23.
